People love JFK. My Grandmother boasted about him to me growing up "He was a wonderful man, you know."
I know some about his politics but more about his time in WW2, where he served as a PT Boat Skipper in Soloman Islands.
The reason I like this story so much is it represents a time where a "hard time made strong men" - a rarity these days. If I try and go to CNBC to check markets or read news during the day, it takes me to this story.
I know that this particular story was probably one of many, and obviously documented because of his status as the son of one of the most wealthy men in the U.S. But in a way I think it makes it even that more impressive. That JFK, at least in this story, did not embodied that of someone with a rich father.
On to the story.
He and his platoon were patrolling in the middle of the Blackett Straight in the pitch dark when the small PT Boat was cut in half by a Japanese Destroyer. Allegedly unnoticed by the Destroyer.
